 Lockdown sailingBirthdays September Heather Hawthorne October Jan Mills, Eric Mills, Grahame Probert, Pam Lorden Rob’s Ramblings – aka Commodore’s Report Hope you are all coping with lockdown, frustrating as it is. For Manutaki it has been a pain in the stern as we were in the middle of a painting programme including a planned haul out to anti-foul. Initially the marina advised we were allowed to do work on our boat with appropriate social distancing, then we were stopped from working on our boats but could still visit them, and now after a complaint, the Police Maritime unit now advise “that they will be stepping up and focusing their patrols at the Marina using both land and sea units and will be asking for valid reasons why any visit to a vessel is essential” I am not sure how long this lockdown will last but we are looking forward to getting our freedom back and being able to catch up with members again. For us the lockdown has not only postponed our club event to the Chateau but also planned family visits. I guess we are luckier than many in Covid’s impact on our lives and should be thankful for that. Our two neighbours both lost their jobs because of Covid. I had a chat to Jennie Rennie today, her and Ian are both well down in Gore with family. Touch wood, we are six weeks away from our first on the water event and we can’t wait to be on the water again, even if we haven’t done our antifoul. Rob Off Water events Wait till lockdown is over On Water Events October 9th Club meet Owhanaki / Huruhi Bay October 23rd BBQ Picnic Beach / Huruhi Bay (Lock down should have been over with by then I hope) 10,000 Night  This month’s bad joke I had lunch with 2 of my unmarried friends. One is engaged, one is a mistress, and I have been married for 20+ years. We were chatting about our relationships and decided to amaze our men by greeting them at the door wearing a black bra, stiletto heels and a mask over our eyes. We agreed to meet in a few days to exchange notes. Here's how it all went. My engaged friend : The other night when my boyfriend came over he found me with a black leather bodice, tall stilettos and a mask. He saw me and said, 'You are the woman of my dreams ... I love you.' Then we made passionate love all night long. The mistress: Me too! The other night I met my lover at his office and I was wearing a raincoat, under it only the black bra, heels and mask over my eyes. When I opened the raincoat he didn't say a word, but he started to tremble and we had wild sex all night. Then I had to share my story: When my husband came home I was wearing the black bra, black stockings, stilettos and a mask over my eyes. When he came in the door and saw me, he said, "What's for dinner, Zorro?" Nautical History Why is the Bridge known as the " Bridge "? The bridge is always occupied by an officer on watch when the ship is in service. It was originally called a 'bridge' because the early paddle steamers were controlled from a structure built between the paddle boxes to provide good visibility - as it looked like a bridge, the name stuck ! Even worse bad joke of the month Three old ladies were sitting at the dinner table discussing their problems with getting old. The first one said, “Sometimes I catch myself with a jar of mayonnaise in my hand, while standing in front of the refrigerator, and I can’t remember whether I need to put it away, or start making a sandwich”. The second lady says, “Yes, sometimes I find myself on the landing of the stairs and can’t remember whether I was on my way up or on my way down”. The third one says, “Well, ladies, I’m glad I don’t have any of those problems, knock on wood”. As she hit her knuckles on the table she looked up and said, “That must be the door… I’ll get it!” Website Subcommittee update. A subcommittee of Rob, Eric and myself was established to undertake a review of the website with the aim of refreshing the site and evaluating the appropriateness of the existing platform. We were planning to meet face to face, but lockdown has got in the way. However, we have been able to make some good progress and it is now starting to look a bit different. With some initial advice from my daughter Anna regarding the technical side and an extensive list of comments/suggestions from Rob, the website has been a bit of a lockdown “project” for me. Work to date has included changing the image, layout, putting our newsletters in, updating the contact us page and generally refreshing. Sounds easy to say, but it took quite a bit of time and became a bit of a learning curve! It very much needs up to date photos and is still a work in progress. Barbara McEwan What some of us are doing during lockdown Rob and Pam Rob is writing a book on what we need to do as individuals, businesses and government organisations to get back to an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable society, country and planet. This includes how we got there and talks about the stuff we shy away from talking about, which I call the elephant in the room, which is a bigger threat than global warming and pandemics, and, Taking Pam and the dog for a walk when it is fine and organizing pre dinner drinks. Jane & Keith Nothing much. We had Bacchus of Brighton hauled out at Gulf Harbour Marina on Monday 16 August. The next day we went into lockdown and the yacht has been on the hard ever since. We haven't been able to go to the yacht and no one has been able to do any work on it. Bacchus had a lot of growth on it when she was lifted out. It was cleaned in Tahiti about last October, so there has been vigorous growth since then. We hope the new antifouling will do a better job.  Roger and Heather COVID LIFE IN A RETIREMENT VILLAGE Its hell here, everyone has had their two jabs, but you cannot “mingle”. You must wear a mask, you cannot have your morning coffee with your mates; the library is closed, however there is a book delivery service if you know what book you want; the café is closed; the gym is closed; the swimming pool is closed; thirsty Thursday Happy Hour with your drinking mates doesn’t happen; you are encouraged to stay in your bubble. There is a cordon at the gate that registers who comes in; family and other deliverers can bring goods that are taken from them and delivered to your apartment. I can leave for an early morning walk. To offset all this, we get a
Heather refuses to acknowledge her change in age until she can have a party to celebrate the birthday. She had to put up with sharing several bottles of bubbles with our neighbours, all standing out in the corridor between the apartments. We take the car for a run once a week to give the battery a thrill and do some shopping at the same time. As I say, life here is hell. Keep safe. Roger The Goodwin’s There's not a lot to say...... We have a very sheltered sunny deck and spa pool. On the sunny days we have had our morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea on the deck - reading, puzzles, etc and pretending that we were on a holiday to the "Tropics". It was very nice, enjoyable and relaxing. Then, time for a dip in the spa. At other times we have done a bit of walking, around the local streets and parks - never venturing far from home. We are in a "Bubble" with our grandson Matt and his girlfriend, Tara. They are working from home, so we often take our lunch with us and meet with them in their lunchtime and they come regularly and have dinner with us. We spend some time on our computers. Brian handling the many emails that he receives and sends. Hetty has been handling the photos that the members of her camera group have emailed in, for a competition sponsored by Canon. The photos needed to be transferred from emails and forwarded in bulk to the sponsor. We have done some badly needed gardening, but there is still a lot to do. We want some new shrubs and two new planter boxes, but they are not determined to be an essential requirement. So we have to wait!!! Wayne has been doing a lot of painting to finish of the renovation. We have had time to hang artwork, tidy, clean, cook, eat, go for walks, do some yoga, bit of gardening, zoom with family and friends, read books, watch movies, listen to music and generally try not to go too nuts.
